My experience may not represent the experiences of many others. However, I felt it was worth sharing because some of the tattoo artists who worked there didn't have very good things to say about the owner, Mark Damion Waters.
My Experience:
After looking around at other shops in the neighborhood, I was immediately drawn to the theme of this place the moment I walked in. It's incredibly well-crafted, reminiscent of Japanese paintings, ukiyo-e, sumi-e, manga, and masks of demons, tengu, foxes, and hannya. The collection is magnificent, and the way it's displayed is superb.
I heard from others that Living Canvas is highly regarded, and I learned that Waters founded the shop in 1993.
As a fellow Generation X guy, this was a done deal for me. 👍
I met with an artist named Nate and checked out his Instagram and portfolio. I then discussed a pitchfork design with flames and smoke, something other artists had told me was difficult.
Nate said it would need to be somewhat large, but he confidently accepted the challenge. That made me incredibly happy.
I made an appointment and agreed to pay a $100 deposit.
The tattoo was a pitchfork, a tribute to ASU. I'm 53 years old and just earned my Master's degree from the W. P. Carey School of Business, and I'm very proud to be a Sun Devil. Getting this tattoo at a shop so close to WPC had special meaning for me.
Nate and I joked about whether he'd still do it even though he's a U of A student. I appreciated his friendliness.
However, I had to reschedule the appointment due to graduation dates and family visits.
After that, it seems Nate has apparently left the shop.
What I found strange, considering the shop had been in business for so long, was that no one informed me.
The shop still had my deposit, but they were no longer able to perform the tattoo I had booked.
Nate's style is different from the other artists at the shop. Anyone familiar with tattoos knows that you need to find the right artist for you, and that you shouldn't just entrust your tattoo to anyone. Tattoos require advanced skills and meticulous work. It's not like Walmart store credit.
Furthermore, I felt uncomfortable with the very concept of tattoo shop credit. The artists aren't employees; they're independent contractors.
When I called to request a refund, they said they'd be happy to process it. However, they required me to come to the shop in person.
So I went to the shop and handed over the receipt and my credit card.
Mark D. Waters was about to start processing the refund, saying, "That's the correct procedure." However, when I asked about the $3 credit card fee, he changed his mind.
It seemed he didn't want to bear that $3. That's fine. It's not a big deal. I told him that repeatedly.
But I felt he was using my question as an excuse to cancel the refund process.
I told him that if the $3 was a problem, I didn't mind if he didn't give it back. Mark Damion then pointed to the receipt that said "non-refundable" and said,
"Never mind. I'm not giving you a refund now."
I replied that was fine, and that I could always dispute it with my credit card company.
He then stood up and accused me of things I hadn't said or done. He then sat back down in the back of the store and continued to insist that he had no obligation to give me a refund. He even yelled at me about talking to the woman sitting next to me, claiming she was "his customer."
Confused by his sudden outburst over something so trivial, I stood near the entrance when he told me to leave.
So I left.
I have since found Nate's new job and am currently trying to make a new appointment.
I'm glad I found Nate. For his privacy, I won't post screenshots of our text messages here. However, Nate told me that Mark D. Waters' "quality of work is low," and regarding his customer service,
"He's not kind; he treats customers like stepping stones to increase his own income."
Waters also seems to enjoy boasting about knowing the mayor. It must be a big deal to him.
So, I say to Mark D. Waters:
You win. Keep that $100.
And as a business owner myself, I've learned something from this experience:
If you tell a customer that "the correct response is to refund the deposit," then you should refund the deposit.
You shouldn't turn customer service into a Kabuki play over just $3. 👺👹

Jake and Matt were great! Five of us went in for a matching tattoo. Didn’t even have an appointment. They helped us determine sizing and placement and we were all tatted and out of there in less than 90 minutes! Nice, friendly, professional and thorough. The place was very clean and tools and surfaces were thoroughly disinfected between each tattoo. If I choose to add anymore I would definitely go back.

Just remembered how bad my experience was with them and felt the need to finally post about it. Told my artist I bought a machine off Amazon to learn about/practice with on fake skin and he threatened to call the police on me (shorter blonde guy). I told him I was only interested in learning about it and he said I have no right to know. Like this is a thousand year old human tradition? Not your monopoly. Have heard some other horror stories from smaller independent artists that this group is trying to make tattooing more exclusive. Maybe right, but not their place to decide who or why. Huge napoleon complex imo. Avoid this place if you don’t want premadonnas

Cannot recommend them enough! I came in as a walk in an hour before close and a very rough idea of what I wanted. Alex helped me finalize a design and stayed after hours to make sure I was happy with it!

My bestie and I came in for matching tattoos without an appointment and we were taken in immediately. We absolutely adored the parlor, super rad! Nate was my artist and he was amazing! Not only did I get a bomb tattoo but he was great company as well! And the music that day was most excellent! The whole experience was awesome and I left with the most amazing tattoo! Every time I look at it I am delighted! Thank you to Nate who did mine and Manny who did my bestie! We would 100% come again!! 😊

I found the shop very clean and well kept, loved the whole layout and decoration from the pictures and faces on the walls. I also found all the staff members helpful to my needs.I was a first time walk-in and Brian was my technician he did a great job with drawing out the tattoo I wanted to have,I'm very pleased with the outcome of my tattoo, l would seek him out for any future work 😀

Everyone was so nice! It was my first tattoo and I was so nervous but it didn’t even hurt! And everyone was super chill overall the entire vibe was so nice! And Jake and Andrew were so funny! 😀 I will be back for sure (I did end up going back and got a shoulder tattoo! It was awesome double shout out to Jake!)

I got a nasty scar on my face when I was a kid. I was getting lies tattooed on my face.
Brian got creative with it. I was trying to avoid going over the scar mainly cause I didn’t know if you could even tattoo scars. (You can) And he came up with this really cool L and placed it right on the scar now it hides most of it. Pretty slick. 10/10

I originally wrote a one star review because of messed up work done by Gaige Austin (he no longer works at the shop so no need to be worried.) The owner (Mark Walters) reached out to me directly in great sincerity and offered to do whatever he could to make it right for me and make the mistake something that I could live with. He was very transparent and kind about the situation and didn't take my original review in a negative way at all. He told me that I could come into the shop whenever I had time for consultation and to talk about what I wanted to do with the mistake. I went in and he was very welcoming and had a great sense of hospitality. He had all of the other core artist come look at the mistake and once he understood how the mistake happened and what it looked like he was very apologetic and took full accountability that this happened in his shop. I showed him the design I was thinking of doing to cover it up and he loved it and one of the other artists in the shop wanted to do it. He handed me over to Jacob Granberry and he booked me an appointment for the following week. Jacob Granberry is a phenomenal artist. He was super welcoming and communicative prior to the appointment. I very much so enjoyed my experience coming back to Living Canvas and Jacob was very fun to talk to and get to know. Super cool guy. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone who wanted any real sharp aggressive lines done in the realm of anything Gothic, Cybersigilism, Anime or Cartoon based. He has a very light touch and the work was quite painless. I have also seen on his Instagram that he does really cool Japanese traditional work as well. I take back my original comment. Living Canvas is a phenomenal tattoo shop that exhibits high professionalism and art. All of the artists in this shop are very kind and radical and do exceptional work. I will absolutely be bringing my work back to Living Canvas and look forward to getting another piece done by Jacob Granberry. Thank you again to Mark Walters, I am so grateful for your hospitality and willingness to take care of me.

However, I will not be returning to living canvas. Also, if you are the type to really care about your body and skin and this inconvenience would affect your self esteem and want very professional work done for the money you are investing, then I would not get any work done by Gaige Austin, and would take your body some place other than living canvas."

Dante did an amazing job of welcoming me in, patiently getting the tattoo sketch right for me, and gently getting it done! It was a simple line tattoo for my first tattoo ever, and I absolutely love it! The studio is amazing and gorgeous! I loved the atmosphere, the friendly staff & other patrons. Came to this shop all the way from Philly and I am so happy with the experience. Got the lizard done by Jake and he was an amazing artist. Painless and easy! Couldn’t be happier with my experience at Living Canvas and working with Andrew. I came in with a geometric phoenix concept and several references, and he turned it into a custom piece that fits my shoulder and arm perfectly. The flow, placement, and overall design are exactly what I was hoping for.
The shop was clean, professional, and easy to work with, and Andrew made the whole process comfortable and smooth. You can tell he really cares about his craft and the final result.
I’m extremely happy with how it turned out and will definitely be back to build more around this piece.

First tattoo! I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but I chose while I was in the shop. Communicated my thoughts and ideas. Staff helped me get the design right. Nate was my tattoo artist. He took my tattoo serious and kept me comfortable. Lovely man, good place of business, clean bathrooms, great vibes!

Alex is an amazing soul… Her attention to detail is beyond reproach and she is all about taking pride in her work along with listening to the customer… (she did my Liberty Leg - see pics)
Mark is all about his love for the job and has a deep passion for doing it right… (he is currently working on my Japanese Kintaro leg piece…)
I would 100% recommend this establishment to anybody that’s serious about getting good work done. All of the artists are very professional, Well spoken, and for what I’ve seen listen to everyone that comes through the door.

Clean, professional, stylish shop with talented artists. They've been in business for 40 years and I can see why! My brother and I went together to get tattoos in honor of our dad who had gotten a tattoo there when the shop first opened at that location 31 years ago. My brother got a detailed replica of our dad's Agave plant tattoo and it turned out perfect! I got a simple but meaningful line art piece that I designed myself. Both of our artists were wonderful, and it was a beautiful experience for my brother and I to commemorate the life of our amazing dad!

Great shop- I’ve gotten tattoos done by both deno and Alex and they both did good. One of the tattoos didn’t heal properly but I appreciate how they offer complimentary touch ups and they do flash sales for premade designs if you’re into that sort of thing. First shop I went to when I moved to Arizona never been disappointed and all staff is very friendly and professional Andrew is extremely helpful and punctual and got in on a last minute sit down for my tattoo . Shop is very clean and nice .

I’ve been going to Living Canvas now for a few months. Mark is working on my sleeve. 30 years of experience shines through. He is the most professional, honest and stand up artist you’ll ever meet. And that goes for the other artists as well. Mark runs a drama free no pressure environment. If you want full blown Japanese body suit or something simple- there’s only one shop you need to visit.

Alex was so so so so so unbelievably talented . She transformed my idea and created something truly beautiful. I was a little cautious getting a tattoo by my color bone because I have a huge huge scare . Alex was able to create something that didn’t hide but complemented my scar so well . She made me so comfortable and made me feel so much more feminine with her design. She was so knowledgeable and created a masterpiece. Will be absolutely going back 10000/10 artist and shop . Living Canvas is the clearly the best tattoo shop in Arizona, not just Phoenix. It is truly the only place where I would even consider immortalizing any art on my body. There’s a reason the mayor trusted them with his tattoo. I’m excited to get my dogs face in the next week to add to my collection again. Worth the wait every time.

I loved the work but i did not like how they treated my favorite artist and the drama the produced within the work environment. Its very unprofessional and honestly childish. Ty(tolga) is my artist and is amazing. He always makes sure your comfortable and educated on what hes doing whenever you sit in his chair. Answers any questions you could possibly have in great detail and always goes above and beyond when tatooing someone. Ive had most of my work done by him and I always leave happy wanting to come back for more. He takes tattooing very seriously while also being fun to work with.

To honor the 10th anniversary of my Mom’s death, I got my first tattoo. While this couldn’t have been a terribly exciting or creative tattoo for the staff, you wouldn’t have known it. The entire staff are respectful and worked to make sure it was exactly what I wanted. My Mom’s handwriting was small but Dante is meticulous. His fine line skills are top quality. The shop is inviting and the staff fun yet professional.

Alex was absolutely amazing! I came to her with a rough idea and a few pictures for a wrap around ocean scene with some stingrays and fishies. Had no idea how I wanted things to be or where to place them but Alex did. I told her my calf was her blank canvas and trusted her with whatever her vision was. She actually added a few details I didn’t even think of like a starfish catching some sun on a rock and a second stingray dancing with a diver. It was all color and took about three sessions. She stuck it out with me and worked tirelessly on it up until the last minute. It took a lot out of both of us but her vision was outstanding and I loved the final look! Towards the end of the last session, I did move around a bit because it was super sensitive and I was sitting at about 4 hours but that was my fault. The entire shop was very clean and friendly and the other tattoo artists were fun to talk to. The owner was friendly and willing to answer questions or share incite. Thank you Alex and everyone at Living Canvas tattoo for giving me my tattoo I’ve dreamed of for 20 years!

The entire Living Canvas crew is awesomeand have nothing but a good time while getting work done. I've had work done at other shops before but have been going to Living Canvas for all my newer tattoos since 2021 and I'm always left in awe when the work is done. I specifically see Mark Walters (owner) as his Japanese tattooing is world-class in my opinion and he's also been tattooing for 40 years. From what I've seen every time I go there although I've never been tattooed by her, Jenna's work is amazing also! There's an artist there for any style you need and if you consult with an artist that doesn't fit your style, they'll direct you to the right artist. There's also excellent teamwork across the board which is something I haven't seen at a shop before and each seem to have valuable input towards placement, style, or flow when it comes to a client's tattoo which makes the experience awesome! I recommend everyone who wants a tattoo to consider Living Canvas first for your tattoo needs and cheers to all of you!

I have quite a few known allergies and have been looking at getting a tattoo. I reached out to a bunch of tattoo shops asking if anyone would do a small test area to see if I have an allergic reaction to the ink. Mark (the owner) from Living Canvas Tattoos replied and said he would be more than happy to do that for me.
I went in the next day and Mark was super friendly and helpful and took a few minutes to speak to me even though he was just about to start a large tattoo on another client. Mark had another artist named Jenna give me a little red dot on the back of my leg.

I am excited to finalize what tattoo design I want so I can go back and get a real tattoo!

Had a great experience here yesterday, getting a little "souvenir" tattoo before I flew home to Oregon. Was my 1st time in AZ. Jake was my artist. He was awesome and did an absolutely amazing job! Was very comfortable with him. Fair prices for good work. They have been open since 1993 and had a lot of good reviews, so we stopped in as a walk-in. All the staff was nice and had a good atmosphere. Highly recommended to anyone! If I ever come back to Arizona, I will be back! Thank you!

Super great experience!! I went into Living Canvas Tattoo to get tattoos with my mom and my sister. We did not have an appointment and were skeptical whether they would have the availability or not. When we walked in, Jacob and Jenna welcomed us in and were so friendly and helpful! They were both so attentive in listening to our ideas for our tattoos and were also so adaptive and receptive when asking for modifications. Overall, it was an awesome experience and I will definitely be going back for my next tattoo!!

I saw Tristan to get my first tattoo and he was awesome. I probably overwhelmed him with all of the things I wanted for my first tattoo. He asked questions and did a great job shifting through all my ideas to find out what I really wanted. He sent me a design and I wanted a few small changes made- he was so chill about making them. I love my new tattoo. It’s more beautiful than I hoped for! Tristan is really great at fine details, shading and color. I am so happy that I found him to create my beautiful flowers.
I had to reschedule because of Covid, and my schedule is tight. He was super gracious and understanding. The tattoo shop is very clean. ( I am a bit of a germophobe- and am easily grossed out.) I was totally comfortable. They also have the most beautiful bathroom! The building is super charming. Tristan and the other artists are warm, friendly and easy to talk to. Tristan was also really fast-I expected the work to take two more hours than it did. I absolutely recommend you go see Tristan for your next tattoo!

One of there artists who work here and was being stalked by an individual and the owner received a message from the stalker and chose to make false accusations against the artist. This is not how you do business and should be handled in house and not slander the artist over social media platforms. This is sad and pathetic

I’ve seen the monthly checks that were paid to her and the months (3) yes MONTHS she worked at this establishment as an employee and the owner wants to take it from the word of her stalker to have her not welcome there and to outright lie about her taking deposits without doing the work. I personally reached out to the owner to have the false accusations that he blatantly posted all over social media platforms removed and he kept defending and spreading FALSE LIES.
PLUS there are rumors that he has harassed all females that ever tried or work at this establishment. This place lost an extremely good artist and tried to ruin her reputation. The owner has slandered her over social media and is in the wrong and I hope he finds out the hard way that this isn’t how you do business!!

PLUS there are rumors that he has harassed all females that ever tried or work at this establishment. This place lost an extremely good artist and tried to ruin her reputation. The owner has slandered her over social media and is in the wrong and I hope he finds out the hard way that this isn’t how you do business!!

I went to see Tiffany today to get my 3rd piercing redone on my right ear because it closed! She was very sweet, and super knowledgeable when it came to piercing; the way she moved my 3rd piercing up higher than before made my ear look so flattering when I have very small ears and ear lobes. I’ve had very bad luck in the past with my piercings ripping conjoining etc; and it was a breath of fresh air to be able to trust someone and be so considerate at the same time. Will definitely be coming back to her to fix my other ear

I had an amazing tattoo experience with Tiffany, she is very professional and friendly. I went for a walk in and I'm glad she was there because she really eased my discomfort of the tattooing experience. My triskelion looks great, I'm so happy with it. I went to see my beautiful sister Tiffany today at leaving canvas tattoo in Tempe. Absolutely love the place. She did an amazing job on my friend and I we got our chest 🙂 pierced lol.. Where do I start. Me and my friend went it to get some of her piercings out due to not being able to herself. Tiffany was so sweet and helped my friend. When we paid and left we had realized our truck was towed so we went back looking for help. Everyone there was so kind and helpful to us. They didn’t need to do everything for us but they did, if you’re wanting the best tattoo artist definitely come here. They are so kind and helpful and they do such amazing work and care so much about their clients, and the people around them.

I went to Tif to get my first tattoo because she tattooed my friend who had nothing but positive things to say about her! It was such an amazing experience; i felt comfortable the whole entire time and didn’t feel like it was an inconvenience to make little tweaks to my tattoo until it was absolutely perfect! Tif was able to perfectly capture what i had in mind! I would 100% recommend her to anyone looking to get a tattoo! She made the atmosphere so much fun and stress free!

I would definitely go back they took great care of me and I really love the work that was done! Me and my husband both went for tattoos on the same day and both got them finished and we are in love! My husband has been here twice for tats. This was my first time here. The shop is always clean. We love our AZ tats! The artists here are top notch and very skilled at what they create. My only feedback is that the artists arrive 15-20 minutes before the shop opens to adequately prep for their first client. It was really chaotic when they first opened which is when we were scheduled. The artist did not start on my husband until 40 mins after his scheduled time. We highly recommend!

I was walk in, the atmosphere is very trendy with unique Asian inspired vibe. The shop was clean and sanitary. The staff was amazing, I got Jenna as a tattoo artist and she did not disappoint. My Tattoo is still healing its small but just what I wanted very simple but to a point. I recommend this tattoo shop to anyone looking to get art on your body.

I got a tattoo with Shane and I am SO happy with how it turned out. He really went above and beyond and gave me the perfect tattoo. This place also has really good Covid precautions. No one can wait inside, and both clients and artists have to be masked. This place also has the best prices in Tempe. I had gotten another tattoo here before and they were both very reasonably priced compared to other places I have been to. This is definitely a very clean, trustworthy, and top notch tattoo place. If you want to get a tattoo in Tempe, this is the place to go!

Andrew was my piercer and he did a phenomenal job. I got my eyebrow double pierced and from the minute I walked in to the time I walked out was about 20 minutes. I showed him a photo of how close I wanted the piercings to be together and explained where I wanted them and he marked it out perfectly the first try. He walked me through what was happening while getting pierced so there wouldn’t be a surprise and overall super chill guy. Everyone was friendly and the place was super clean. They also had precautions in place for COVID and everyone wore masks which made me feel much more comfortable getting work done there. Definitely going back to get other piercings done here!

I went to living canvas to get a medical id tattoo. The artist listened to me and my concerns, drew the tattoo just as I was hoping and did an excellent job on the tattoo. Being my first tattoo I was a little nervous but my artist @breestingertattoo explained to me what to expect and made the whole experience positive. I would recommend this shop to anyone seeking a tattoo.

Went here to get my forearm done. Only went in with an idea, I met with Boston and we set my appointment. When I came in on my day, the artwork he drew was absolutely beautiful and I couldn't be happier with the end result.
